The Mountain huts |
|
| The high summits of the Valaisan Alps were untouched for a long time. It was only during the Romantic Movement that the wild beauty of the stormy gorges and the high peaks became known. |
The first successful climbs followed and, with them, a passion for mountaineering. Because of this it was necessary to find starting off points for the treks as well as refuges in case of bad weather. High perched alpine chalets were set up and the bivouac sites of the pioneers of mountaineering were improved upon.
The foundation of the Swiss Alpine Club in 1863 signalled the birth of cabins and refuges aimed at facilitating alpinism and at encouraging the spirit of mountain adventure. In 1911, the SAC already had 70 cabins. Presently, other societies, ski-clubs and gymnastic clubs set up and manage cabins. These which are at low or medium altitudes serve as relay points for walkers. They have become pleasant places with a certain degree of comfort, warm surroundings, and an intimate atmosphere: they have a soul.
We can’t thank the voluntary members of these societies and the caretakers enough, for their great enthusiasm, and their efforts, to provide us with unforgettable moments.
